Experiencing the Hoh Rainforest and the Hall of Mosses hike is all about immersing yourself in the lush, otherworldly beauty of one of the largest temperate rainforests in the U.S. Here’s how to make the most of your visit:
PRO TIP : the HOH is out there! If you don't plan on spending at least 1 night in forks, skip the hoh and spend more time exploring around lake crescent for a similar vibe; specifically moments in time trail, marymere falls, lake crescent lodge and bovee's meadow.
set on seeing the hoh? Let's go!
Best Way to Experience
the Hoh Rainforest & Hall of Mosses
1. Arrive Early or Late
The Hoh Rainforest is one of the most popular spots in Olympic National Park, so arriving early in the morning or late in the afternoon helps avoid crowds.
Early mornings offer misty, magical views, while late afternoons provide soft golden light filtering through the moss-covered trees.
2. Start at the Visitor Center
Stop by the Hoh Rainforest Visitor Center to learn about the ecosystem and pick up a trail map.
Rangers sometimes offer guided walks, which can deepen your understanding of the rainforest’s unique flora and fauna.
3. Hike the Hall of Mosses Trail
This 1.1-mile loop is an easy hike with minimal elevation gain, making it perfect for all skill levels.
The trail winds through ancient trees draped in moss, creating a fairy-tale-like atmosphere.
Keep an eye out for Roosevelt elk, which often roam the area.
4. Explore Other Nearby Trails
Spruce Nature Trail (1.2 miles) – A slightly longer loop that follows the Hoh River, offering a different perspective of the rainforest.
Hoh River Trail – If you’re up for a longer adventure, this trail extends 17 miles into the heart of the rainforest.
5. Pack Smart
Wear waterproof hiking shoes—the rainforest is wet year-round.
Bring layers and a rain jacket, as the area receives up to 12 feet of rain annually.
Carry bug spray, especially in warmer months.
6. Consider Camping
Staying overnight at the Hoh Campground lets you experience the rainforest at dawn and dusk, when it’s most peaceful. Need a larger lodge and plan on staying out west longer? Check out our AlderMoss Riverside Retreat, just 45 minutes from the Hall of Mosses Trailhead and 5 miles from all of downtown Forks.
Reservations are recommended during peak season.
